Cricut Design Studio is an amazing tool for crafters, but it can be a little confusing for beginners. So here is my beginners guide to this brilliant software.

Some crafters may be misled into thinking that all they need to make cut outs is Design Studio. While every available design cartridge is included with the software, when it comes to cutting you still rquire the relevant cartridge to complete your design. Studio's job is to make it easier for you to make unique layouts, by giving quick access to thousands of design elements. The options are truly endless, but you may have to do a little bit of cartridge swapping. It all depends on which letters and images you have included in your layout.

Connecting letters together to form one cutting is referred to by crafters as welding. To weld letters together, remember to check the littlewelding box on your computer - next to each individual letter or image. Another interesting thing about welding is that it removes any scorelines on the image.

The nice thing for beginners is that fellow crafters share their designs over the internet. Visit the message boards at the Cricut website where Design Studio users freely exchange ideas. You will also get links to download free designs that you can open with Design Studio. Use these designs as they are, or draw inspiration from them - a nice starting point for the frustrated beginner.

Once you've bought Design Studio you are entitled to free lifetime updates via the Cricut website. It's great to download the latest cartridge release for free and get even more designs to craft with!
You can use several layers when creating a design. For example, If you are creating a shadow for an image you need to open a new layer just for the shadow. Otherwise, when you go to cut it will cut the image and the shadow at the same time using the same paper. When previewing, the user has the option as to whether or not other layers show through to the one they are working on.

Design Studio allows you to make layers. So, for example, you can create letters that have a shadow. The letters are the first layer, the letter's shadow the second layer. As you might imagine, some beautiful layouts are possible, if you use several layers at once. But make sure, when creating shadows, that you open a new layer just for the shadow. Otherwise, when you go to cut it will cut the image and the shadow at the same time using the same paper. Disaster!
