Guest Post: Cricut Ideas – Art for the Inept!

I have always been a big fan of crafty people, but have for the longest time could never seem to create anything myself that I could be proud of. I love the concept of creating something beautiful and lasting for others to appreciate, but despite my fantastic imagination, I don’t seem to have much physical talent. Scissors and stencils are clumsy and awkward in my hands. I feel defeated by paints and pencils. I can imagine wonderful things, but when I try to draw or trace something, it always ends up looking like a 5-year-old did the work. Fortunately, I can use my fabulous Cricut machine to make up for what I lack in physical ability.

Besides the usual scrap booking and other small projects, I love to create beautiful collages for my friends. With the new Cricut design studio software, pretty much anything I can imagine I can create.

I always start with the person I am creating for in mind. I think about who that person is, what I like about them, and what they love best in the world. I also take into consideration their personal decorating tastes and color schemes. I like to use my wild imagination to dream of fantastic color combinations and interesting shapes and words, then combine and recombine until I have a definitive masterpiece, a statement that is individual for each person. I like to think of it as a piece of visual poetry.

It is easiest to create something for a kid’s bedroom – they seem to love getting a personalized collage or wall hanging as a gift. With the great selection of cartridges and flexibility of the design studio I can always find ways to fill up a poster sized space with all the right colors, characters, and words for a child. As kids grow and change, each stage can be a new exciting challenge. I also love to commemorate special events in this way, by including some create photos. It is especially effective because you can personalize by focusing on the interests and events of each person.

Creating a work for an adult is more difficult, but can be more rewarding. I am inspired by events and pictures. I like to view each person’s style and try to complement it with new color schemes and meaningful phrases. I have had a few disasters – a few projects that ended up in a garage somewhere – but so many more successes! Each time is a learning experience, each time I try something new, and each time I come away with new understanding of how to make something beautiful.

Every project is a work of art. I mat and frame them, and give then as gifts to people I know and love. It is a great reward to see something I created with my mind and heart looking professional and beautiful - hanging is on the wall in a home!
